Portugal, one of the most modern countries of Europe, yet historical in nature is an enchanting peninsula located in the most western region of Europe. Lisboa, or Lisbon, being the capital of the country, has its roots deeply emerged in rich historical background with novelty of modern civilization, thus marking it as one of the major capital cities in Europe. About 3 hundred thousand years ago, Lisboa developed its name on the face of this earth by the famous legendry character from Greece. It is believed that Ulysses, the infamous Greek hero discovered this city and the original name was Ulissipo or Olissipo, (originally from the Phoenician word “Allis Ubbo”), which means, “Enchanted Port”. It was Romans who stayed in Lisboa in 205 BC. But it came in front as a nation in the beginning of 12th century and lasted as one of the oldest cities of the world.

Lisboa keeps a record of reconstruction and restoration due to several natural disasters like earthquake of 1755 and the other reason was the battle ship between scores of invaders like Phoenicians, Moors, Arabs, Romans and Spaniards. The city got settled down in the 12th century when it was recaptured by Christian crusades, and finally ended the era of Moors (arrived in 714) which exceeded for 450 years. Later, than in 1252, Lisboa was announced as the capital city of PORTUGAL.
From 15th to 18th century, the beautiful peninsula became generously famous for its charmed port. Explorers used this port for sailing and discovering other parts of the world. Portugal was the only country that took the Discoveries as the country's own risk, and not in other countries that the adventures and discoveries were made by private. Infante Dom Henrique de Avis, better known as Henry the Navigator, is a major contributor to the beginning of the Age of Discovery, encouraging the first trips to the discovery of new territories. The findings become an activity with the support of the Crown and creates the foundation for the expansion of the empire.
Vasco de Gama found a new route to India which makes this century unforgettable. Other discoveries through Atlantic Ocean were made by reaching new colonies in the Americas and South Africa. These novel discoveries made Lisboa one of the richest and prosperous lands in the entire world.
